If you need new dentures, you have to know at least some basic ideas about what they are, and what the available options are. Dentures can understandably raise questions, but if you are armed with the right information, and with the help of your dentist, you can choose what is best for you.
Dentures are available in four different types. Some are expensive, and some are affordable. Regardless of the pending dental expenses, you need to know the differences between these types. Here is a brief description of each type of denture, so you know what to expect.
Standard Denture
Standard dentures are the oldest type among the four. They have been in use for many decades now. They are designed primarily for people who have lost all their teeth. Considering its approach is old, standard dentures have been modified through the years, so they can fit properly, and more comfortably. Today, most standard dentures can be seen without a back portion. This is to enable it to fit, and adjust easily. However, without the back portion, and with repeated removal during brushing, it makes it harder to keep dentures in place.
Cu-Sil Dentures
Cu-Sil dentures are designed for people who have few remaining teeth that are separately positioned in their mouths. Its design and appearance is similar to a standard denture except that it has holes in it with a silicone rubber gasket lining. The holes are where the individually remaining teeth are inserted, and they form a full set of teeth in the oral cavity. It is the simplest kind of partial denture that is removable. If you are looking for a complete set of dentures, this is not for you.
Immediate Dentures
Immediate dentures also work as partial dentures, but they are not for permanent use. They are designed as temporary dentures when you have had some teeth extracted. To avoid having the look of missing some teeth, you are immediately fitted with an immediate denture.
Dental Implants
Dental implants are the most expensive among the four types of dentures. Getting a full set of dental implants can cost you almost the same as a down payment for a middle class house. This is because dental implants are the most effective kind of denture available. A hole is drilled into the bone structure of a missing tooth. Here, an implant is inserted and allowed to heal. After healing, a post is attached on top of the implant. Then a crown, as a replacement for the missing tooth, is placed on top of the post.
Choosing the right dentures can be confusing for many people. This is understandable considering not everybody gets a denture even once in their lifetime. The good thing though is that because of technological advancements, dentures are becoming more and more stable and durable. Consult your dentist for more information.
